Ponniyin Selvan 2, the sequel to the Tamil film, Ponniyin Selvan released in theaters today. The film doesn’t quite have the same hype a sequel for a film usually has – like as in Baahubali 2 and KGF 2. The film has an ensemble cast though and it is directed by Manirathnam. Let us see what the film has in store for the viewers.
Story:
The second part of Ponniyin Selvan starts with Megastar Chiranjeevi’s voiceover of the story. Proceedings start with Buddhists and Vallavaraiyan saving Arunmozhi, Nandini, and Pandyan groups seeking revenge on Aditya for Veerapandyan’s murder and Madhuranthakan and his Shiva Bakth’s followers aiming for Chola throne. What happens to Aditya Karikalan and Nandini? Will Madhuranthakan gets the supreme chair of the Chola kingdom forms the rest of the story
What about on screen talents?
As mentioned, the film has an ensemble star cast comprising the likes of Karthi, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dulipala, Aishwarya Rai, Nassar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, and others. Everyone did justice to their roles.
What about the off-screen talents?
The film is made on a large scale and the grandeur is to be seen on big screens. Maniratnam has succeeded in presenting this story of Cholas on a grand scale. But the drama factor doesn’t quite work for all language audiences. Particularly so for the Telugu audience who expect commercial highs in the narration. On top of that, the narration is too slow and makes the audience feel bored many times throughout the movie.
AR Rahman’s songs are passable. They aren’t too great or too bad. The background score is also not worth mentioning. There are no high-pitched BGMs that induce a high to the viewers. The visual presentation is very good though, thanks to the cinematographer and the CGI team.
What’s Hot?
- Performances
- Cinematography
- Story
What’s Not?
- Slow narration
- BGM
- No high moments
- Rushed climax
Verdict: Ponniyin Selvan 2, Similar to the first part, depends on the story, cinematography, and performances by the main cast. On the flip side, snail paced narration, no goosebump moments, lackluster BGM by Rahman, and a Rushed climax make it an average watch at the maximum. If you liked PS1, you may give PS2 a try. If not, you can comfortably skip it.
