A day after the Union government wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India NV Ramana to recommend the name of his successor, the CJI today named Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the next Chief Justice of India.
On Wednesday, Law minister Kiren Rijiju requested NV Ramana to name his successor. In response to it, the CJ of the apex court recommended the name of the second senior judge of the Court.
Justice Ramana will retire on August 26 after discharging his duties as the CJI since April 24 last year.
If appointed, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will become the second Chief Justice who was directly promoted to the top court Bench from the Bar after Justice S M Sikri. However, Mr Lalit will have a little less than three months term as the CJI, as he is set to retire on November 8, 2022.
