Disney Star India is in the process of merging with Reliance Viacom, a move that began earlier this year. Recent reports indicate that Disney+ Hotstar and Jio Cinema will consolidate into a single OTT platform. Jio Cinema is expected to be phased out in favor of Hotstar due to the latter’s superior user interface and technical capabilities.
The newly formed platform will be named Jio Star. The integration of Jio and Hotstar is scheduled for completion by Wednesday, November 13, with the platform anticipated to launch on Thursday, November 14. Once operational, users will have access to content from both Hotstar and Jio Cinema on this new platform.
Jio Star aims to establish itself as the third major competitor in the OTT market, joining Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Previously, only these two platforms have actively pursued digital rights for high-profile films. With Reliance’s strong backing, Jio Star is poised to make significant strides in acquiring OTT rights.
