India has rolled out E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, across the country ahead of its original 2030 target. While the move is aimed at reducing crude oil imports and promoting cleaner fuel alternatives, it has sparked protests and widespread debate among motorists, experts, and social media users.
Demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 5 to oppose the nationwide implementation of E20 fuel. At the same time, online discussions have intensified, with many vehicle owners raising concerns over the compatibility of older vehicles with the new fuel blend. Some users claim E20 could reduce fuel efficiency, affect engine performance, and increase maintenance costs for vehicles that were not designed to run on higher ethanol blends.
The policy has also drawn political attention, with allegations circulating on social media regarding a possible conflict of interest involving Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s family’s ethanol-related businesses. However, no official findings have confirmed these allegations.
Environmental concerns have also been raised, with critics pointing to the large amount of water required for ethanol production and questioning its long-term sustainability. Several consumer groups have also demanded that E0 and E10 fuel options remain available, allowing vehicle owners to choose the fuel best suited to their vehicles.
Amid the growing criticism, reports suggest that the government is considering delaying the proposed rollout of E25 petrol. However, no official announcement has been made regarding any change in the implementation timeline.
