A deeply disturbing case from Macherla has sparked outrage, raising serious questions about both family violence and systemic failure. A 23-year-old woman, Chowdeshwari, was allegedly murdered by her own father weeks after she chose to marry against her family’s wishes. According to reports, Chowdeshwari had married Nagaraju, rejecting a financially well-settled match arranged by her father. The decision reportedly angered her family, leading to tensions at home. In a tragic turn of events, her father Chandrashekar allegedly called her back home and, with the help of a relative, killed her by asphyxiation.
Initially, her death was recorded as a suspicious case, and the body was sent for postmortem examination. It was during the postmortem that the truth reportedly came to light, with findings indicating death due to suffocation. However, despite this crucial medical evidence, the case did not immediately proceed as a clear murder investigation. Serious allegations have now emerged against a police officer, CI Venkataramana, who was reportedly handling the case. It is alleged that the officer registered the case only as a suspicious death despite the postmortem report pointing towards homicide. Accusations have also surfaced that he accepted bribes to dilute the case and protect the accused.
Following multiple complaints to higher authorities regarding corruption and mishandling of the case, CI Venkataramana has been suspended. Officials are now expected to re-examine the investigation and take appropriate legal action based on the evidence.
The case has triggered widespread concern over how crimes, especially those involving women, can be suppressed or misrepresented due to influence and corruption. Many observers have pointed out that without persistent efforts and complaints, the truth in this case might never have surfaced.
This incident has also reignited the debate around so-called “honor killings” and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws to protect individuals who choose to marry by their own will. It highlights not only the dangers posed by regressive social attitudes but also the critical importance of accountability within the system. As the investigation moves forward, there is growing demand for justice for Chowdeshwari and strict action against all those responsible, both for the crime and for attempting to cover it up.
