Rohit Sharma’s sensational innings (80) and Jasprit Bumrah’s two crucial wickets (2/32) helped Mumbai register their first win in IPL 2020. They beat Kolkata Knight Riders by a huge margin of 49 runs. Kolkata never seemed to be in the chase of 195. None of their batsmen stood up to the occasion, which eventually resulted in a defeat right in their first game.
Mumbai lost the toss in their second match as well. After opening the batting, Mumbai lost an early wicket in the form of Quinton de Kock. Still, they didn’t lose the momentum as both Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav played a cracking game. They made 98 partnership for the second wicket. Yadav was run-out when he was at 47. After his fall, Rohit got good support from Saurabh Tiwary. Spin magician Sunil Narine dismissed Tiwary in the 16th over. Rohit got deadly after scoring his half-century. When he looked extremely dangerous, Mavi removed him. KKR was quite economical in the death overs. In the end, Mumbai scored a total of 195 for the loss of five wickets. Young Mavi impressed by taking two wickets of Rohit and de Kock.
KKR needed a thunderous start to chase this total but they failed to get it as both the openers Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine failed to deliver. Kolkata only scored 33 runs with a loss of two wickets in the first six overs. Skipper Dinesh Karthik tried to build things with Nitesh Rana. After a reasonable partnership, both of them fell in consecutive overs. Then, the entire responsibility fell on Eoin Morgan and Andre Russel. When they tried to power up the game, Bumrah bowled Russel. In the same over, Bumrah also sent Morgan back to the pavilion. After Russel and Morgan’s exit, KKR’s loss became inevitable. At the end of 20 overs, they managed to score 146/9
