Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s recent comments about his reduced presence in Hindi cinema have sparked a fresh debate, drawing a strong reaction from BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut. In a BBC interview, Rahman suggested that a “power shift” in the film industry and possible “communal” factors may have contributed to the decline in his Hindi film projects since 2018. His remarks quickly went viral, prompting discussions across social media and the film fraternity.

Following the backlash, Rahman released a clarification video, stating that his words were misunderstood and that he did not intend to target any individual or community. He emphasized that his focus remains on music and creativity, not controversy.

However, the comments did not sit well with Kangana Ranaut, who responded strongly through her Instagram stories. The actress, who is also a Member of Parliament, accused Rahman of prejudice and hypocrisy. She revealed that she had once approached him for music for her upcoming 2025 film Emergency, but the request was allegedly declined. According to Kangana, intermediaries informed her that Rahman viewed the film as “propaganda,” a claim she strongly rejected, stating that the film presents a balanced portrayal of historical events.

Kangana further alleged that she has repeatedly faced discrimination in the film industry due to her political views. She cited an emotional incident involving fashion designer Masaba Gupta, claiming she was stopped from wearing a Masaba sari during her visit to Ayodhya. Kangana said the incident left her humiliated and in tears while sitting in her car, adding that such experiences reflect a larger pattern of bias against her.

The actress questioned why ideological differences should affect professional collaborations and accused certain sections of the industry of selectively promoting narratives while sidelining others. Her remarks have reignited discussions about political alignment, creative freedom, and inclusivity within Bollywood.

As the debate continues to unfold, both Rahman’s comments and Kangana’s response have drawn widespread attention online, once again highlighting the growing intersection of cinema, politics, and personal ideology in the Indian film industry.
