It is known that Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who is the 49th Chief Justice of India, will be retiring on November 8 this year.
In this context, the Union Law ministry penned a letter to the Chief Justice, requesting him to name his successor. Now, Justice UU Lalit has handed over the letter of recommendation to Justice Chandrachud. He called a meeting of all apex court judges to ceremonially hand over the letter of recommendation.
Justice Chandrachud would become the 50th Chief Justice of India, and he would have a tenure of two years. He is due to retire on November 10, 2024.
Justice Chandrachud was appointed judge of the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016. He was before that the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013.
