It is known that a-century-old cable bridge collapsed in the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi district on Sunday evening. This tragic incident shook the entire nation as more than 130 people were killed, and several were injured in it. The cable bridge was restarted five days ago after renovation.
US President Joe Biden on Monday expressed his deepest condolences over the bridge collapse incident. Taking to Twitter, the president wrote, “In this difficult hour, we will continue to stand with and support the Indian people.”
“Today, our hearts are with India. Jill and I send our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the bridge collapse, and join the people of Gujarat in mourning the loss of too many lives cut short,” Biden said in a statement.
“The United States and India are indispensable partners, with deep bonds between our citizens. In this difficult hour, we will continue to stand with and support the Indian people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the family of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for each of the wounded. The Gujarat government also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the deceased family members.
