Host cum actress Suma Kanakala’s rural drama, Jayamma Panchayathi under the direction of Vijay Kumar Kalivarapu had hit the screens today. Let’s check how it is.
Story:
Set in a small village in the Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh, Jayamma Panchayathi revolves around the life story of a strong lady Jayamma ( Suma Kanakala). What happens in her life when she comes to know that her husband has a heart-related issue ( role played by Devi Prasad)? What will she do to overcome the financial hurdles and save her husband? How is the village Panchayati board interconnected with the entire setup, forms the rest of the plotline.
On-screen Performances:
Suma Kanakala impresses with her performance in this silver screen comeback film after more than two decades. Her character as an aggressive and strong lady brings life to the screen. Suma is impressive with her natural acting in emotional scenes which are the key portions of the film. A few village accent comedy scenes involving Suma and the villagers evoke good fun on screen.
Devi Prasad gave a convincing performance in his purposeful role as Suma’s husband. Most of the film has new artists in the role of villagers and all of them gave a natural performance.
Off-screen talents:
Music by legendary musician MM Keeravaani is just okay. While all the situational songs are passable on screen, his background elevates a couple of scenes.
Anush Kumar’s photography is good as he captured the village atmosphere nicely through his lens. Editing work by Ravi Teja Girijala is okay as he kept the runtime crisper. Production values by Balaga Prakash’s banner are apt for the film’s genre.
Coming to the direction skills of Vijay Kumar Kalivarapu, the director chosen a wafer-thin storyline that revolves around the family problems of Jayamma and tried to present it for more than two hours. While the narration is slow and takes its own sweet time to enter into the main story, the key proceedings in the second half lack a gripping presentation. If he would have worked even more on the screenplay version, the result would have been even better.
Positive Points:
- Suma
- Dialogues
Negative Points:
- Slow and dull narration
- Wafer-thin storyline
Verdict:
In an overview, Jayamma Panchayathi is a rural drama that revolves around the family problems of Jayamma. Though Suma Kanakala impresses with her performance, the lack of strong presentation makes thefilm a disappointing watch this weekend.
