Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has completed 12 years since he was released on bail. He was granted bail in 2013 and continues to remain free, making this the longest bail period ever in Indian legal history.
Jagan was arrested by the CBI in 2012 in connection with alleged disproportionate assets and corruption cases. After spending more than a year in jail, he secured bail in September 2013. Since then, his bail has been extended continuously by the courts without cancellation.
This unusual situation has drawn attention because, in most cases, bail is either cancelled or cases are cleared within a few years. But in Jagan’s case, the trial has been delayed for over a decade. Legal experts point out that no other political leader in India has remained on bail for such a long time without the final judgment.
Despite the pending cases, Jagan continued his political journey. He founded the YSR Congress Party, became Leader of Opposition, and later served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2019 to 2024. His political career flourished even as the legal cases stayed unresolved.
As of today, Jagan’s bail continues, making his case unique and unprecedented in Indian political and legal history.
