Lok Satta founder and former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan has strongly criticized the Tamil Nadu Governor over the reported refusal to invite TVK chief Vijay to form the government despite his party emerging as the single largest force in the Assembly.
In a strongly worded statement, Jayaprakash Narayan described the Governor’s stand as “undemocratic” and against the spirit of the Constitution. He argued that the question of majority support must be decided only on the floor of the Assembly and not inside the Raj Bhavan. According to him, Governors should not interfere in the democratic process or engage in partisan politics while holding constitutional office.
Narayan urged the Union Government to immediately intervene and advise the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government without delay. He pointed out that minority governments have successfully functioned in India in the past, citing examples such as Indira Gandhi after the 1969 Congress split and P. V. Narasimha Rao between 1991 and 1996.
He further warned that ignoring the people’s mandate in Tamil Nadu could damage public trust in democracy and politics. Referring to political instability seen in neighboring countries, Narayan said disrespecting democratic norms can eventually trigger public unrest and weaken governments.
The Lok Satta founder also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Home Ministry to act with “wisdom and foresight” in protecting constitutional values. He added that if the Governor still refuses to act, strict action should be taken to uphold democratic principles.
