The fifth Test match between India and England, scheduled to begin today, has been cancelled after Team India’s support staff tested positive for Covid on Thursday.
England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed the development on Friday. “Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled,” ECB said in a media statement.
“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the statement further read.
However, all Indian players tested negative for RT-PCR results on Thursday and it was expected that the fifth test will be held as per the schedule, but it wasn’t to be.
India were leading the five-match series 2-1 after a thumping victory at The Oval. If the last Test match is cancelled, Team India will win the series.
