In another big spike, India recorded 247,417 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative tally to 36,317,927. Of this, 5,488 cases were of the newly detected Omicron variant of coronavirus.
As per the Union health ministry’s data, this latest single-day rise is 27% higher than yesterday, when 194,720 people tested positive for the virus.
Major contributors to the daily cases included Maharashtra (46,723), Delhi (27,561), West Bengal (22,155), Karnataka (21,390), among others.
On the other hand, as many as 84,825 more people were recovered from the infection, taking total recoveries to 34,715,361. The recovery rate is now at 95.59 per cent. India’s active caseload stands at 11,17,531. In the last 24 hours, 481 people went down with the virus, increasing the total reported death toll to 4,84,859.
Meanwhile, the total tally of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has reached 1,54,61,39,465.
