Idli Kottu is a 2025 Tamil-language family drama film that is dubbed into Telugu. It is written and directed by Dhanush. The film has Dhanush & Nithya Menen playing the lead roles while Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, R. Parthiban, P. Samuthirakani, Geetha Kailasam, Ilavarasu, Vadivukkarasi, Brigida Saga, Indumathy Manikandan & others are seen in important supporting roles. The music is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar while the film is produced by Aakash Baskaran & Dhanush under Dawn Pictures & Wunderbar Films banners.

Story:

Shiva Kesava (Rajkiran) owns a small idli shop in his village. This shop is a place he holds very close to his heart. His son Murali (Dhanush), however, aspires to a modern city life of comfort and wealth. After finishing his hotel management course, Murali partners with Vishnu Vardhan (Sathyaraj) in Bangkok to grow the AFC food empire. Impressed by Murali’s dedication and hard work, Vishnu Vardhan plans to marry his daughter Meera (Shalini Pandey) to him. But an unforeseen turn of events brings Murali back to his village. What are these events? What role does Kalyani (Nithya Menen) have in this story? How will Murali go on to fulfill his father’s long-cherished dream? Forms the core plot of the film.

What about on-screen performances?

Dhanush returns to his strong zone, delivering a natural and effortless performance as Murali. These kinds of roles are a cake walk for him, and he once again shines in a rural family entertainer, just as he did in “Thiru”. His act in the emotional scenes, in particular, are bound to resonate strongly with the audience.

Nithya Menen also does well as Kalyani, the hero’s love interest, and the duo once again showcase an easy, charming chemistry on screen like the way they did in “Thiru”. She has a few funny scenes that work well in the theatres.

Rajkiran & Geetha Kailasam do an extraordinary job as the hero’s parents. They are a perfect fit for their parts, and the emotions with their roles work well.

Arun Vijay delivers a standout performance as the egoistic and arrogant rich brat. His playful jabs at Dhanush and sharp sarcasm in the second half work brilliantly, adding both humor and spark to the narrative.

Shalini Pandey is pretty decent with his performance as the girl who wants to marry the hero in the first half. But her Telugu dubbing felt a bit odd at times.

Ilavarasu gives as solid a performance as the guy who supports Dhanush throughout the film. He also gets a few funny parts, and he passes with flying colors.

Sathyaraj as the wealthy father and Samuthirakani as the parota shop owner leave their own mark in key supporting parts.

R. Parthiban, Vadivukkarasi, Brigida Saga, Indumathy Manikandan & all others are fine in their respective limited roles.

What about off-screen talents?

The story by Dhanush is simple yet impactful with heart-touching emotions. The main plot revolves around the Idli shop, and the best thing about the writing is that he makes the shop a key character in the film and runs the emotions around it.

The screenplay, too, is neatly written with emotional moments in both halves that have been handled very well. The rich–poor conflict and the message it wants to convey are written in an effective manner. The way Dhanush builds such a deep emotional connection with the idli shop in the first 20 minutes of the film itself is commendable.

The first half is completely enjoyable with touching moments and good family scenes. The video call scene where the hero rejects the marriage is the best part of this half, along with a massy interval scene in typical Dhanush style. While the second half turns more commercial with a routine revenge angle, but again ends with a proper round off to all the characters, along with the core emotion of the Idli Kottu. The manner in which a police character helps the hero character in this half is one of the biggest high moments in the film, which is written & showcased beautifully.

Director Dhanush does an excellent job with his whole presentation and narration. He handles the emotional aspects well, especially in the first half, but the second half could have been stronger instead of drifting into the commercial zone. But the way he ends the film with a sweet, fun scene is appreciable.

The Telugu dialogues are fine in most parts, but they did have a few weak ends at times. The Telugu dubbing too is done quite effectively.

 delivers a solid musical score, with songs that are appealing, adding charm to the narrative. His background score, on the other hand, beautifully elevates the emotional moments, creating a pleasant and lasting impact that enhances the overall experience of the film.

Cinematographer Kiran Koushik captures the village atmosphere beautifully, showcasing its natural charm with rich and striking visuals.

The edit by G.K. Prasanna is good. Though the pacing is slow but he makes sure that there is no dull moment for a longer period.

Special mention to the artwork by Jackie. The idli kottu is designed well, and the props used inside it feel authentic and real.

The production values by Dawn Pictures & Wunderbar Films are adequate.

What’s Hot?

* Dhanush’s Performance
* Nithya Menen’s Performance
* Emotional First Half & Good Interval Block
* Strong Emotional Connect
* Ennaallakochhade Song & Choreography
* First Rate Direction
* Cinematography & Production Values

What’s Not?

* Second Half Goes On Commercial Mode
* Slow Paced Narrative
* Sathyaraj’s Character Arc
* A Routine Hero-Villain Ego Conflict
* Non-Violence Point Looked Ineffective

Verdict: Overall, Idli Kottu is a regular family drama that moves at a slow pace but has a few engaging moments. The emotional beats in the first half strike the right chord, while the second half slips into a routine hero–villain track that weakens the impact. But on the whole, it is an easy watch if you like simple & soulful family entertainers like “Thiru”.
