Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a sharp attack on the Andhra Pradesh government, alleging that the police system in the state is being misused to suppress dissent and silence opposition voices. In a lengthy social media post beginning with “Hello India!”, Jagan accused the government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of turning the police machinery into a political tool to target critics and curb freedom of speech.
Jagan said Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of speech as one of the strongest pillars of democracy, but claimed that the constitutional right is now under threat in Andhra Pradesh. According to him, social media activists, YSRCP supporters, journalists, and ordinary citizens who question the government or expose its failures are allegedly facing intimidation, harassment, and politically motivated cases.
The YSRCP chief alleged that TDP leaders and supporters are deliberately filing complaints against social media posts critical of the government, following which police officials are quickly registering cases and invoking questionable legal provisions. He further claimed that false FIRs are being filed against dissenting voices in an attempt to create fear among citizens.
Jagan also accused the police department of directly sending notices to social media platforms seeking removal of content critical of TDP leaders and demanding suspension or blocking of accounts exposing government failures. Calling it a “coordinated censorship campaign,” he alleged that the state government is trying to control public discourse and suppress democratic expression through misuse of official machinery.
The former Chief Minister further alleged that while criticism against the TDP government is being targeted aggressively, abusive content and alleged misinformation spread by TDP-affiliated social media accounts against YSRCP leaders are being ignored. Despite complaints and evidence submitted by YSRCP leaders, no cases or FIRs are being registered against those accounts, he claimed.
Jagan stated that democracy cannot survive in an atmosphere where fear replaces freedom and criticism is criminalized. He strongly condemned what he described as authoritarian, politically motivated, and anti-democratic actions, and demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government immediately stop misusing police powers and suppressing opposition voices.
The post has now triggered intense political debate in Andhra Pradesh, with discussions around freedom of speech, social media regulation, and alleged political targeting once again dominating the political narrative in the state.
