Harley Davidson, one of the most famous brands in the world, decided to tap on the Indian market, 10 years back. After a decade, Harley Davidson is thinking of exiting the Indian market. It is a fact that India is the world’s largest two wheeler market with more than 17 million bikes sold last year. This is a treat for all the bike manufacturers.
But most of the 17 million bikes sold are below 150cc range. Harley Davidson is known for making bikes above 500cc range and this market is pretty small in India. In 2020, the company sold just 2500 units in India and the market going forward is looking even tough. Indians are preferring Royal Enfield in the heavy bikes section as they are affordable and are good in mileage comparatively.
More over, Royal Enfield is considered as the pride of India and is designed to fit the Indian roads and ecosystem. On the other hand, Harley Davidson is a luxury bike which can’t withstand few of the Indian roads. Apart from the high price, the maintenance cost may pile up. With the raising fuel prices, the mileage of these bikes are out of reach. Considering all these aspects, Indians are moving towards other options which is making Harley Davidson to think of packing up in India.
