In a shocking development, India has reported more than 4,000 deaths in a day because of Covid-19. This is the first time that the South Asian country has touched this grim record by registering 4,187 fresh deaths and taking the toll to over 2.38 lakh.
Besides witnessing a record number of deaths, the country has also seen more than 4 lakh daily cases for the fourth time in a week. With 4,01,078 more people testing positive, the cumulative caseload in the country now stands at 2,18,92,676. While 1,79,30,960 people have been discharged, India has 37,23,446 active cases.
Maharashtra continues to be the biggest contributor to the daily tally, as the state recorded 54,022 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Karnataka with 49,000 and Kerala with over 38,000.
Meanwhile, nearly 23 lakh Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered yesterday, and a total of 16.7 crore doses have been administered so far since the beginning of the world’s largest vaccination program in January.
