Ziona Chana, believed to head the world’s largest family — with 38 wives, 89 children and 33 grandchildren, — died Sunday at 76 in Mizoram.
Including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the number of family members is over 200. Due to the family’s residence, Baktawng Tlangnuam has become a major tourist attraction in the state. The Chana family follows a religion called Chhuan Thar Kohhran. In this religion, men are allowed to have polygamy.
Doctors on Sunday concluded that Ziona Chana had died of hypertension and diabetes. However, his family members are adamant that he is not dead. They not only denied the news of the death but also stayed at home, including the body, without conducting a funeral.
Zaitinkhuma, secretary of the church, claimed that they could feel his pulse after reaching his home at Chhuanthar Tlangnuam village in central Mizoram’s Serchhip district on Sunday evening.
Doctors at Trinity Hospital in Aizawl confirmed that Ziona Chana was dead and moved the body home.
