Amidst the Coronavirus chaos, it is announced that the Rajya Sabha elections that were scheduled for 26th of March will be postponed. As the Country is heading towards a total lockdown, Election Commission has taken this decision taking in consideration the safety of everybody. While the whole country is in the fight against Coronavirus, we conducting the Rajya Sabha elections is not right, stated EC.
It did not give any clarity on when will be the next schedule for the elections. Almost 55 seats were supposed to go for elections this week and these seats will end up empty until further announcement. The effect of the Lockdown was seen more on Tuesday. As on Monday many people were seen getting punished for violating the lockdown, people are more conscious of stepping outside.
Already the Supreme Court has announced that all the cases should be dealt working from home and the lawyers will be taking up the cases from their homes itself via video calls. So, even if there is any untoward in the elections, it will be hard for the Supreme Court to intervene and handle the disputes.
