With the situations worsening day by day, death news of actor Sushant Singh Rajput has appalled and devastated many all over the nation. After knowing that it was because of suicide for undisclosed reasons, the situation aggravated even more leaving many clueless. It was heard that he was having depression pills from the past six months.

Lot of the common people have come forward via social media and alerted everyone to be kind and never criticise their fellow beings because we never knew what the person is going through. Some individuals said to reach them out if anybody from their friend list are feeling low. While some who have a basic idea about the depression rubbished and said the person going through such trauma will not be in a state of mind to even talk to opposite person in the first place.

What exactly happens in the mind during depression?

Most of the cases that we get to know is something beyond depression and suicidal thoughts. Here the actual thinking pattern that lead them to suicide is important to be known. So when a weak hearted person cannot accept the bad things in life, for instance it could be a rejection from a partner who expects love, an unbearable insult, irreparable financial losses and pressure from the lender to repay it, intense amount of ragging and body shaming, an orphan who has no one to care for, likewise there could be countless number of reasons. The person seem to be normal from outside. Nonetheless intense amount of distress triggers certain symptoms initially.

It begins with absolute hopelessness, anxiety, loss of mind control, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, incoherence in speech, sometimes excessive hunger, mood swings etc. One most common case that happen in the sufferer’s mind is the constant inner voice that dominates his/her intellect to kill themselves. It seems as if a ghostly demonic voice has possessed and puts them to rigorous cycles of trauma and hopelessness by urging the person to commit suicide. To reiterate the aforementioned point, a colleague or a friend should identify the depressive symptoms of the individual with a deep talk but rather not suggest and post like an update saying “you can contact me if you have depression”, which cannot happen in reality.

Same is the case with doctors who suggest the patient to be strong and not seclude themselves. They advice the depressive patient to seek their help or to reach them out. Such practice could give a momentary courage but it will soon disappear when the symptoms of depression shoot up in the person. The person going through depression can never self identify it unless it’s a second cycle of depressive episode.

Antipressants in combination of psychotherapy will recuperate the health and should not be neglected. However in some cases they do not work too and it requires additional help.

So what would be the ideal way to battle the depression?

  • Initially the victim’s parents/ friends should be aware about the condition and not neglect any weird behavioural patterns. Immediately they should seek help from a psychotherapist.
  • They should ensure that the sufferer do not isolate in a room as it could worsen the situation.
  • An emotional help need to be provided to the depressive person every now and then.
  • A caretaker should make sure that depressed person doesn’t skip the pills
  • Later the victim should be known about the symptoms of depression and worst consequences that could happen. This could at least reprogram his/her mind gradually to normal thinking.
  • In general positive affirmations are followed by many successful people. There are ample of videos available in YouTube to motivate oneself. Initially the victim would be skeptical to watch or listen. Nevertheless, hidden affirmations in the form of subliminal messages/binaural beats are available in the form of entertaining music. So the victim could show interest to listen and get better.
  • The friends or family members should make the individual watch a comedy movie or amuse them in every possible way to keep the mind engaged.
  • If possible the victim should be taken for a walk or a physical activity as they yearn to go out during such times. A proper amount of physical activity, water and sunlight could definitely heal, as it’s proven too.
