Delhi has begun testing a new pollution-control technology called Pawan III, a stationary air purification system designed to reduce pollution levels at busy roads and traffic hotspots. The pilot project aims to tackle vehicular emissions and road dust by filtering polluted air before releasing cleaner air back into the environment.

The Pawan III units have been installed at high-traffic locations, including Kirti Nagar, where they use a high-capacity suction mechanism to draw in polluted air. The air then passes through a multi-stage filtration system that captures particulate matter before cleaner air is released back into the surroundings.

According to officials, earlier pilot trials of the technology recorded nearly a 29% reduction in particulate pollution in the immediate vicinity of the devices. Encouraged by the initial results, the Delhi government is evaluating whether the technology can become part of the city’s long-term air pollution strategy.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, inspected the Made-in-India Pawan III units during a visit in May. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve air quality throughout the year rather than relying only on seasonal anti-pollution measures during winter.

Officials said the project will also undergo technical evaluation by IIT Delhi before any decision is taken on expanding the deployment across the capital. If the results continue to be positive, more Pawan III units could be installed at major traffic junctions and pollution hotspots.

While the initiative has received appreciation as an innovative step toward cleaner urban air, some environmental experts believe roadside air purifiers alone cannot solve Delhi’s pollution problem. They say long-term improvements will also require stronger action on vehicular emissions, public transport, industrial pollution, construction dust, and stubble burning in neighboring states.

For now, the Pawan III trial represents another attempt by the Delhi government to explore new technologies that could help improve air quality and reduce pollution exposure for residents in one of the world’s most polluted cities.
