The central government announced on Monday that the debt burden on farmers in Andhra Pradesh is on the rise. Providing details in the Lok Sabha, the government stated that Andhra Pradesh ranks second in the country in terms of farmers’ debt burden.
The total loans from commercial banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks for AP farmers amount to Rs. 2,43,073 crore, while Telangana farmers’ debt burden is Rs. 1,12,492 crore. The Center noted that in nine states, farmers’ debt burden has increased by over one lakh crore in each state.
The ranking of states based on debt burden is as follows: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra stood in the first five places, Kerala, Telangana, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh are at next four places, respectively, as revealed by the central government in the Lok Sabha.
