Celebrating 30 years of the legendary blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a stunning bronze statue of their characters, Raj and Simran, at London’s Leicester Square. This statue is a historic first, marking the very first time an Indian film has been honoured with a permanent sculpture at this world-famous landmark. It now stands proudly alongside global cinema icons like Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Batman, and Wonder Woman — a moment that highlights the worldwide cultural impact of DDLJ.

The statue captures Raj and Simran in one of their most beloved poses, celebrating the timeless charm of Yash Raj Films’ classic, directed by Aditya Chopra. Leicester Square holds special meaning for fans, as the location appeared in the film during the early moments when Raj and Simran unknowingly cross each other’s paths. The unveiling event was attended by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani, and Heart of London Business Alliance Chief Executive Ros Morgan.

Shah Rukh Khan said the film was made with a pure heart and a belief that love can break barriers. He shared that DDLJ is deeply personal to him and seeing the film honoured this way is emotional and unforgettable. He thanked the people of the UK and the Heart of London Business Alliance for celebrating the film and giving it a place of pride in global cinema history.

Kajol expressed that watching the statue being unveiled felt like reliving history. She said the honour proves the film’s emotional connection across generations and that Leicester Square is the perfect place for this tribute. She added that DDLJ receiving such recognition in the UK will always remain close to the hearts of fans across the world.

Released in 1995, DDLJ quickly became a global cultural phenomenon and remains the longest-running Hindi film in Indian cinema history. Its influence continues even today, with references worldwide and a recent musical adaptation staged in Manchester. The story of Raj and Simran — two young NRIs who fall in love during a trip across Europe and India — continues to inspire millions, keeping the film alive in theatres and hearts.

YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani said the statue is a proud moment for the studio and for Indian cinema, showing how deeply DDLJ has resonated across the world. Being honoured alongside Hollywood legends proves the film’s lasting cultural power and motivates YRF to keep telling impactful Indian stories to global audiences.

This 30-year celebration marks a milestone not just for the film, but for Indian cinema on the world stage. The bronze statue of Raj and Simran now stands as a beautiful reminder of love, nostalgia, and the magic of DDLJ for generations to come.
