Child marriages is one of the major stigma of this society which government is trying its best to eradicate. Despite so many efforts there are still child marriage cases reported.
Currently the society is facing bigger problem of corona virus and Indian government has imposed lock down which means we can step out of house if and only if it is extremely necessary. However amid this crisis situation child marriages are continuing to be happening.
According to the government orders as marriages cannot happen as it requires group gathering, child marriages are now being performed in house holds amid family members.
Two such cases are reported in Tiruvannamalai district last week, according to the officials. One marriage happened at Thandrampet and another one near Chengam.
They suspect that there are more number of child marriages being done but there is less reporting. An official revealed that usually it is the child marriage victim who comes out to report or the child’s friend will help.
Due to lock down no one can step out of house and most child in these villages do not have any mobile phone. This is the major reason for under reporting of child marriages.
