It is known that Supreme Court in March ruled that the appointment of CEC and election commissioners will be done by the President of India on the advice of a committee comprising the prime minister, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.
The Centre has now moved a bill in the Rajya Sabha to regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners.
According to the bill, the appointment will be done with a selection committee consisting of The Prime Minister (chairperson), the leader of Opposition in the house of the people member and a Union cabinet minister to be nominated by the Prime Minister. However, the latest move from the Centre is set to trigger a fresh tussle between the executive and the judiciary.
