The Punjab Congress crisis has reached its final stage. Congress party leader, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday resigned from the post. He met Governor Banwarilal Purohit at Raj Bhavan and handed him his resignation letter.
The power struggle with PCC president and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has finally led to the resignation of the Chief Minister. Amarinder Singh is reported to have resigned on the orders of the Congress chief. Amarinder’s resignation comes in the wake of a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party led by PCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu at 5 pm this evening.
It is learned that Amarinder spoke to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi this morning saying that he could not face such humiliation rather than resign from the party. The state goes to the polls early next year.
Over the past few months, a section of MLAs have heaped criticism on Captain Amarinder Singh and demanded new leadership. Raninder Singh confirmed it and tweeted a photo of the Captain handing over his resignation to Purohit.
