Finally, here comes the big day, which is being anticipated for quite some time. The central government has revoked the Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which implies that the special status to Jammu and Kashmir has been scrapped now.
Home Minister Amit Shah has made an announcement regarding it, in Rajya Sabha today. Right after his announcement, there was a severe uproar from the opposition party leaders in the Upper House. With least concern towards any such disturbances, the President of India has approved the proposal, within few minutes after the Union government had released a Gazette notification.
Adding to it, the Centre has also decided to divide the state into two Union territories, among which one would be Jammu & Kashmir and the other one is Ladakh. While J&K is going to have a legislature, Ladakh will be left with no such identity.
Former Chief Ministers of J&K- Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and also another prominent leader Sajjad Lone were placed under house arrest. Internet and Mobile Services were suspended across the state and even Section 144 was imposed in Srinagar, as a precautionary measure. The move comes in the form of fulfillment of BJP’s long-standing promise. However, there were divided opinions on the government’s decision.
