Amaran is a 2024 Tamil language biographical action war film written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. The film has Sivakarthikeyan & Sai Pallavi playing the lead roles while Bhuvan Arora, Rahul Bose, Lallu, Shreekumar, Shyam Mohan, Geetha Kailasam, & others are seen in important supporting roles. The music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar while the film is produced by Kamal Haasan, R. Mahendran & Vivek Krishnani under Raajkamal Films International & Sony Pictures International Productions banners.
Story:
The film is a true-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan (Sivakarthikeyan), a commissioned officer in the Indian Army`s Rajput Regiment. It is set against the backdrop of the Qazipathri Operation in Shopian, Kashmir, which took place back in 2014. Major Mukund was awarded the Ashok Chakra for his valor during a counterterrorism operation while on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides being a tale of courage, it portrays the selfless love of his wife, Indhu Rebecaa Varghese (Sai Pallavi).
What about on-screen performances?
Sivakarthikeyan is sincere and effortless as Major Mukund Varadarajan. He fits in well with all his looks and gets the body language of an army officer right. His physical transformation is appreciable and he never goes overboard in the depiction of patriotism.
Sai Pallavi is as usual outstanding with her role. She looks apt as an Army Officer’s wife and we cannot imagine anyone other than Sai Pallavi playing this role after seeing the original pics of the real Indhu Rebecaa Varghese. She is very good in all the emotional scenes and her acting in the film will leave you moved and proud as well.
Bhuvan Arora & Rahul Bose are decent in their key supporting roles.
Lallu, Shreekumar, Shyam Mohan, Geetha Kailasam, & all others are okay in their respective parts.
What about off-screen talents?
The film is an adaptation of the book series ‘India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes’ by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, which contains a segment based on Major Mukund Varadarajan.
The adapted story by Rajkumar Periasamy is honest and stays true to the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan. All the major moments of his life are well conceived and the Army portions are engaging too.
The screenplay however has its share of ups & downs. The first half is beautifully written with a sweet love track and good family drama while the second half becomes a bit boring with lengthy action parts and dragged-out portions in Kashmir. But again the climax sequences will move with hard-hitting emotions.
Director Rajkumar Periasamy does a fair job with his presentation. But his narrative needed better writing, especially in the second half. He blends good emotions into the film with relatable family drama that happens in an Army family. Also, the way a few Army elements are shown on screen didn’t look authentic which should’ve been taken care of.
The Telugu dialogues by Hanuman Chowdary are good and the Telugu dubbing is neat.
The songs by GV Prakash Kumar are good. ‘Hey Rangule’ is a soothing melody. Also, his background score is riveting in all the action parts.
The cinematography by CH. Sai is first-rate. The whole of Kashmir’s culture and rivalry between the Indian army and extremists are skillfully captured by the DOP.
The editing by R. Kalaivannan is not up to the mark, especially in the second half. Almost about 20 minutes of the film could’ve been easily chopped off.
The production values by Raajkamal Films International & Sony Pictures are top-notch.
What’s Hot?
* Sivakarthikeyan’s Performance
* Sai Pallavi’s Performance
* Sweet Love Track In The First Half
* All Scenes Between Sivakarthikeyan & Sai Pallavi
* Emotional Climax Sequences
* Hey Rangule Song & Good Background Score
* Cinematography & Production Values
What’s Not?
* Unengaging Screenplay In Second Half
* Too Lengthy Action Blocks
* Few Boring Portions In The Second Half
* Army Backdrop Isn’t Authentic At Few Places
Verdict: Amaran is an honest tribute to Major Mukund Varadaraja with good family drama and an emotionally charged climax. But the dragged-out & lengthy second half is a big drawback to the film which should’ve been cut short. Overall, it is a fair watch.
