The government of Andhra Pradesh recently hit a road bump after the AP high court decided to intervene with their move to appoint an executive officer as the in-charge of Ahobilam temple.
The high court then pointed out that only a Mathadipathi can be the in-charge of the temple and not some Executive Officer appointed by the government endowments department.
The government challenged this call at the Supreme Court, but only for it to be upheld by the Apex court.
The Supreme Court questioned the AP government “Why are you stepping into that? Let the temple people deal with it… Why should religious places not be left to religious people?”.
As things stand, a Mathadipathi will continue to be the in-charge of Ahobilam temple, as decided by the temple people.
