Thousands of people rushed to Kabul’s airport this morning in an attempt to flee Taliban-held Afghanistan. With many countries, including India and the United States, operating special flights to bring back their citizens, the Kabul airport was packed with people on Monday.
However, the reports said that the airport is currently closed due to chaos as hundreds of people tried to forcibly board flights leaving Kabul. As per reports, nearly five people were killed at the airport after they were holding themselves tightly to the tyres of an aircraft that was taking off from Kabul.
The Afghan airspace has been closed, and a NOTAM or notice to airmen has been issued to say Kabul airspace is no longer usable.
“We are diverting our flights from the US to Delhi without going over Afghanistan. All the flights will be refuelled in Doha/UAE and arrive in Delhi. We planned to fly to Kabul at 12.30 this afternoon. But that is not the case now,” Air India sources said.
Flights from many countries, including the United States, are also available at Kabul Airport for their citizens. With the latest decision, everything had to get stuck there.
The Taliban is in control of the country after President Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan and admitted that the insurgents had won the 20-year war.
