When the movie belongs to someone like Prabhas, who enjoys a massive stardom, there are naturally high expectations. When the movie is Adipurush, the expectations are even higher, considering that it is based on Hindu culture and religion. Adipurush has been released today and let’s see how it has turned out to be.
Adipurush deals with the Aranyakandam of The Ramayana, where Sita is abducted by Ravana, and Lord Rama goes after Ravana, and to find Sita and bring her back. The names used for Rama, Sita and Ravana are different here, but the story is the same.
Prabhas gives a subtle performance as Raghava and shows a lot of restraint when it comes to the way he portrays his emotions on the big screen. Even if it is a scene with huge buildup, he doesn’t go hyper, which is highly commendable, as the actor tries to project the best possible version of Lord Ram.
Kriti Sanon is a surprise as Sita, she is better than anyone could have expected. She does her job quite well, and looks the part too.
Devdutt Nage and Sunny Singh as Hanuman and Lakshman are good in their roles.
Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh is the disappointment of the movie. While the actor gave his best, it feels like he fell short at one point or another, and it reflects on the big screen.
First of all, director Om Raut should be congratulated for making the visual effects of the movie much better than they were at the time of the teaser release. There’s a huge improvement, and it’s an advantage for the movie. The elevation scenes for Lord Ram have also been conceived very well by the director. However, it is the character of Lankesh that went awry, for sure. Right from the look and design of the character to the way it has been executed on the big screen, everything looks very modern and doesn’t fit the bill. If that would have been taken care of, things would have been so much better.
Another major gripe with the film is that while the visual effects are alright, the vanara sena doesn’t give a very convincing feel to the audience, as the use of chimpanzees and other animals of the monkey family make it look like it’s been inspired from some Hollywood movie, rather than give you an authentic feel.
The background music of the film is the strongest supporting pillar of the movie, elevating the scenes by a large extent. The cinematography is good enough.
The production values are high, and it is clearly visible. The editing is fine.
- Lankesh characterisation
- Vanara Sena
Verdict: Adipurush is a faithful adaptation of The Ramayana, and that’s okay. However, the major letdown comes in the form of some underwhelming effects, and getting certain fine details wrong. On the whole, Adipurush falls short of expectations but would be an okay watch if seen with out much expectations.
