Bulbbul, a Netflix original produced by Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma built decent buzz, thanks to its intriguing trailer. The film is available for streaming on Netflix from today and here’s our take on it.

What about story.?

Bulbbul(Tripti Dimri), a carefree girl is married off to Indranil(Rahul Bose) a man who is roughly more than thrice her age. The child bride is left with no other option but to stay obedient and behave like a typical Indian housewife back in the 19th century. But things take steep turns once Bulbbul’s brother-in-law, Satya starts investigating a series of murders in the village, which are suspicious as only men are being killed.

How about on-screen stars performance?

Tripti Dimri looks gorgeous and she performs well. For most parts, she is seen sitting idle but she does carry the menacing look on her face. Rahul Bose gets a brief role but he excels in the character, which closely resembles a gentle monster. Avinash Tiwary, and Paoli Dam carry their roles with ease.

How about off-screen talents?

Bulbbul, being a mythological folklore with horror elements does need a hint of fantasy angle to it. This is where the cinematographer Siddharth Diwan comes into play as he uses a crimson tint, which complements the narrative and the basic plotline of the film. The Visuals are appealing and adhere to the theme.

Amit Trivedi’s background score is apt although it is stereotypical at times. Writer turned director Anvita Dutt is making her debut with the film and she does succeed in getting the best out of her lead cast. But she falters in writing penultimate scenes as predictability kicks in post the halfway mark.

What’s hot?

The lead cast

Cinematography, and VFX

What’s not?

Predictable screenplay

Ends on a dull note

Verdict:

The film, as a whole, touches various social problems pertaining to domestic violence on women dating back to the 19th century and are relevant even now. A few subplots including the one featuring Bulbbul and her sister-in-law rake up interest but the succeeding sequences are not up to the mark. The murders have a horror touch and the investigation episodes are okayish. The excellent production designing adds some value. Anushka Sharma, the producer asserts the fact that she is inclined towards feminist flicks.

Immediate reaction after end credits:

The viewers get a knack of the proceedings in the opening sequences itself and there is no big reveal towards the end. Ends on a dull note.

Watch or not?

Bulbbul is a multi-genre film with sleek technical values. This genre has been rarely explored and will certainly offer a new watching experience to South Indian audience. However, the film has its own set of flaws.
