Movie Jai Bhim
Star Cast Suriya
Director T. J. Gnanavel
Producer Suriya, Jyothika
Music Sean Roldan
Run Time 2 hr 44 Mins
Release 2 November 2021

Jai Bhim is Suriya’s second consecutive OTT release after Soorarai Pottru. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video and it can be streamed on the platform now. Here is our review of the film.

Story: Rajakannu (Manikandan), a daily wage worker from the ST community is nabbed by the police with a false case levied on him. But days later, he goes missing from police custody. Then, his wife Sengenni (Lijomol) approaches Chandru (Suriya) to fight for justice. Can Chandru ensure justice to the innocent family, and also thousands of other individuals who are illegally arrested by the police department?

What about on-screen performances?

Lijomol Jose and Manikandan play the couple who are oppressed by the police. They deliver spotless performances. Suriya comes up with a standout performance. Not often do we see star heroes picking up such sensitive subjects. Suriya deserves all the appreciation for agreeing to do such a hard-hitting and socially relevant subject. Rajisha Vijayan delivers a fine performance as well. Prakash Raj and Rao Ramesh play author-backed toles and they are flawless.

What about off-screen performances?

TJ Gnanavel is a class act. He narrates the sensitive subject in the most sensitive way possible. The way he handles the socially relevant subject is of top tier quality. The background score and cinematography complement the narrative and they add a great deal of technical value.

Special mention to the police station and courtroom scenes. The scenes in the police station depict the cruelty of police custodial torture and they are heart wrenching. The courtroom scenes are powered by Suriya’s stellar performance and the novel underlying storyline. The investigation track is a tad uneven though.

What’s Good?

  • Police station and courtroom scenes
  • Emotional connect
  • Stellar performances

What’s bad?

  • Doesn’t cater to all sections of viewers
  • A tad offbeat
  • Seemingly lengthy run-time

Verdict:

Jai Bhim is true to its theme and it presents police cruelty and caste oppression in the most sincere way possible. The film is powered by spending performances and Gnanavel’s narrative. That said, it has a seemingly lengthy run-time and doesn’t cater to all sections of the audience. If you love realistic social dramas, then this is the film you might want to watch this weekend.
