The owner of MDH spices, Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, popularly known as Masala King, died this morning. He was 98 years old. Reportedly he had been undergoing treatment from the past three weeks for age related illness. It is being told that Dharampal Gulati had cardiac arrest and breathed his last at 6 am on December 3 at Mata Chandan Devi Hospital in Delhi.

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took to Twitter to announce his demise.
Last year, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred Padma Vibhushan to Mahashay Dharampal for his contribution in business and food processing.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia also shared condolences on the death of Mahashay Dharampal Gulati.

Dharampal Gulati was born on 27 March 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan and it was from here that the foundation of his spice business was laid. The company started with a small shop in the city, which his father started before partition. MDH turned a 1500 rupee start up to a crore worth empire. However, at the time of partition of the country in 1947, his family shifted to Delhi.

The next-generation entrepreneur is known to have said his inspiration to work is being honest in product quality sold at affordable prices. Close to 90% of his salary went to charity.
