Tamil film Mookuthi Amman, starring Nayanthara and RJ Balaji is dubbed and simultaneously released in Telugu as Ammoru Thalli. The comedy caper can be streamed on Disney Hotstar starting from today and here is what we felt about the film after watching it.

Story:

Ramaswamy (RJ Balaji) is a Uttharandhra resident who works as a news reporter. He tries to shed light on the illegal assignment of 11,000 acres land to Bhagavathu Baba, but his pleas are not taken seriously by anyone. One day, Ramaswamy’s family deity, Mukkupudaka Ammavaru(Nayanthara) appears in front of him and promises to save the 11,000 acres of land. Ramaswamy does not believe this supernatural occurance at first but slowly comes to terms with it. The rest of the story unveils how Ramaswamy and Ammavaru fight against the illegal assignment of land.

What about on-screen performances?

Nayanthara as deity, Ammavaru looks very authentic. She carries off the complex role with a greta deal of authority and grace. RJ Balaji is good in the comical role and he is in his elements. The dubbing is okayish. Ajay Ghosh who plays the fraudulent Baba looks menacing. The rest of the star cast deliver what is expected of them.

What about off-screen talents?

Ammoru Thalli has a peculiar concept as it deals with a goddess who is set out to save the lands of the common public. The story is strictly decent but the screenplay which touches the underlying issues in the society is striking. The directors RJ Balaji and NJ Saravanan take a satirical approach when it comes to narrative and they succeed to an extent.

Dinesh Krishnan’s cinematography is very impressive and so is Girish’s music and background score. The run-time should have been much lesser as many scenes look stretched.

What’s hot?

Nayanthara’s performance
RJ Balaji satirical comedy
A few scenes based on modern-day problems
Message oriented story

What’s not?

Very ordinary story
Poor screenplay
Boring for most parts
Underwhelming climax
Stretched out run-time
Verdict:
Nayanthara’s Ammoru Thalli does not cater to all sections of audience. The satirical screenplay is good in parts though. The scenes between RJ Balaji and Nayanthara are the main assets of the film as they are presented well. But the boring storyline kills off any excitement and that takes a toll on the movie watching experience. This Diwali release fails to keep the viewer engaged all the way through.

Watch or not?: You can give it a try if you have too much time to spare.
